Scarborough Seniors Slo-Pitch League (SSSPL) started in 1984. The league was formed by a group of men who had played softball in their earlier years and wanted to be active again. A game,
slo-pitch, was witnessed by them and tried. So began the SSSPL.
Currently there are 8 teams selected (drafted) by volunteer team managers and assistant managers based on player ratings agreed upon by the executive committee and the team managers at the end of the previous season. League umpires are volunteers from among the players. Ideally, at least 2 players from each team willingly volunteer. The ball season consists of 28 regular season games followed by a 7 game round robin. The top 4 teams in the round robin enter the Championship round while the bottom 4 teams enter the Consolation round. The season concludes with a banquet/luncheon for players and their guests at the end of September.
Since 2004, the league has sponsored an “Invitational Tournament” for 12 – 16 teams from Ontario. This one day tournament is held at East Point Park with awards, prizes and lunch provided. In 2006, this tournament was renamed the “Carl Spencer Tournament” in honour of one of the founding members of the SSSPL.
The SSSPL has an annual golf tournament for the players. Also, the league makes an annual donation to the Variety Village “Santa Claus Fund”.
